Day 1 - 2 Board your transpacific flight and skip a day as you cross the International Date Line.
Day 3 Arrive Auckland, New Zealand. Free time to explore the “City of Sails.” Visit Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World, shop, or perhaps take a walk around the exciting marina.
Day 4 Auckland–Waitomo–Rotorua. Travel south to Rotorua via the rich pastoral province of Waikato to the fascinating Waitomo Caves. Here, experience an included guided tour of the famous GLOWWORM GROTTO featuring an underground boat ride. Continue on via Lake Karapiro to arrive in Rotorua.
Day 5 Rotorua. Today visit TE PUIA. Here you will view Maori carving and weaving demonstrations, and walk through the thermal reserve to see boiling mud pools and shooting geysers. Next, visit RAINBOW SPRINGS, a unique showcase of New Zealand’s flora and fauna. Finally, enjoy The NEW ZEALAND FARM SHOW, a hands-on experience of New Zealand’s farming history. The afternoon is at leisure. Perhaps take a tour of the Buried Village. This evening enjoy a MAORI HANGI (feast) and CONCERT.
Day 6 Rotorua–Lake Taupo–Napier. Depart Rotorua and head to Napier via Lake Taupo. Upon arrival in Napier, take some time to visit the wineries for which the region is famous. The main street displays some of the best Art Deco architecture in the world, and a guided walk is a great way to get an understanding of the history.
Day 7 Napier–Wellington. Head south for Wellington. On arrival, make time to visit “Te Papa,” the Museum of New Zealand, an interactive museum. Other highlights of the Capital City include a visit to the Beehive/Parliament buildings, a gondola ride, or a coffee on the waterfront. For a dining experience that embodies New Zealand’s multicultural society, try dinner at Monsoon Poon at 12 Blair St. Courtenay Place.
Day 8 Wellington–Kaikoura. Today board your FERRY and cruise through the Marlborough Sounds to Picton. Continue along the east coast to Kaikoura. The Seat-in-Coach option includes the TranzCoastal train from Picton to Kaikoura.
Day 9 Kaikoura–Christchurch. Start your day with a WHALE WATCHING CRUISE. Continue south to Christchurch, the “Garden City.” The Seat-in-Coach option includes the TranzCoastal train from Kaikoura to Christchurch.
Day 10 Christchurch. The entire day is yours to explore Christchurch. Ride the gondola for spectacular views of the city, Canterbury Plains, and Banks Peninsula. Perhaps take a tram ride around the city center, go shopping, or walk through Hagley Park and visit the botanical gardens.
Day 11 Christchurch–Mount Cook Region. Travel south via the Canterbury plains. The stunning turquoise blue water of Lake Tekapo surrounded by the Southern Alps makes a great photo stop. Continue on to Mount Cook.
Day 12 Mount Cook Region–Queenstown. Continue south over Lindis Pass to the wine-making region of Central Otago. Carry on through the Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand.
Day 13 Queenstown. Milford Sound Excursion. Travel in a coach along the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau, gateway to FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK. View the Mirror Lakes as you continue through the Eglinton Valley. From the Homer Tunnel emerge into the Cleddau Valley. Join your Milford Sound CRUISE including buffet lunch for an unforgettable experience. (L)
Day 14 Queenstown. A free day to enjoy the many leisure pursuits offered here. These include jet boating, bungee jumping, and much more. The staff at “The Station” can assist with information.
Day 15 Queenstown–Wanaka. Today, travel north to Wanaka. This charming lakeside resort offers a host of activities, including mountain biking, hiking, and fishing.
Day 16 Wanaka–Franz Josef. Continue north via Haast Pass and along the rugged west coast to Franz Josef. Upon arrival in the afternoon take a walk to the base of the glacier.
Day 17 Franz Josef–Christchurch. Today, travel to Christchurch via Arthur’s Pass, a journey famous for the spectacular mountain scenery of the Southern Alps. The Seat-in-Coach option includes the TranzAlpine train from Greymouth to Christchurch.
