   Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Berlin, Germany
. Time to rest or to start exploring the capital of reunited Germany. At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel. (D)

Day 2: Berlin
. This morning, sightseeing with a Local Guide in the once-divided metropolis includes the elegant Ku’damm, the restored Reichstag, Charlottenburg Palace, a picture stop at monumental Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial, and the 210-foot Victory Column in the vast Tiergarten Park. Visit the KAISER WILHELM MEMORIAL CHURCH with its bomb-damaged tower, drive along Unter den Linden Boulevard, and pass the State Opera House and Checkpoint Charlie. Afternoon and evening at leisure, and an optional excursion to Potsdam is available. (B)

Day 3: Berlin–Dresden
. A comfortable drive through what used to be the “other” Germany to Dresden. Badly damaged by Allied bombing in February 1945, the city has since been restored to its baroque splendor. Your Local Guide explains Dresden’s associations with Friedrich Schiller and Richard Wagner and the magnificent architecture of the Semper Opera. Visit ZWINGER PALACE and the GREEN VAULT, Augustus the Strong’s famous treasury, and see the recently restored Frauenkirche. This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 4: Dresden–Meissen–Leipzig
. Today, stop in Meissen, brought to fame by its 300-year-old PORCELAIN FACTORY. During the visit, see a variety of exhibits illustrating the history of porcelain manufacturing. Arrive in Leipzig, an important center since the Middle Ages. (B)

Day 5: Leipzig
. Your guided walking tour includes a visit to the THOMASKIRCHE, where Johann Sebastian Bach worked, the museum, and the Market Square with its fine renaissance buildings. Afternoon at leisure. (B,D)

Day 6: Leipzig–Weimar–Erfurt
. Morning drive to Weimar for a walking tour with a Local Guide. Hear about the giants of German literature, Schiller and Goethe, and take pictures of their residences. Next, visit HERDER CHURCH with its wonderful painted sermons. Arrive in Erfurt, where the fine gothic and renaissance buildings bring back the days of the Dominican Master Eckhart and Martin Luther, who spent his student days here before embarking on his journey to Wittenberg. Marvel at the medieval Krämer Bridge, on which 33 dwellings are built. (B,D)

Day 7: Erfurt–Celle–Hamburg
. A leisurely drive to Celle to admire its beautifully preserved, half-timbered houses. Afterwards, drive through the prettiest part of Lüneburg Heath to Hamburg, Germany’s gateway to the oceans of the world. (B,D)

Day 8: Hamburg
. This morning, during your sightseeing, a Local Guide explains the sights: the beautiful Hanseatic City, romantic Alster Lake, ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH, and the elegant Jungfernstieg. Next is a scenic HARBOR CRUISE. Afternoon at leisure, and tonight you may wish to join an optional excursion to the nightlife district of St. Pauli with its brightly illuminated Reeperbahn. (B)

Day 9: Hamburg–Berlin
. On your way back to Berlin, stop at the former East-West border. Tonight, enjoy a special farewell dinner at a local restaurant with your companions of a fascinating vacation. (B,D)

Day 10: Berlin
