Day 1 (Sun.) Board your overnight transatlantic flight.
Day 2 Arrival in Rome, Italy. (Mon.) Time to rest or start exploring the Eternal City. At 6 p.m. meet your Tour Director and traveling companions and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner with wine in one of Rome’s lively restaurants. (D)
Day 3 Rome. (Tue.) Sightseeing with your Local Guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Cross the Tiber and visit the COLOSSEUM and the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman Legions marched in triumph. Then time for independent activities and exciting optional excursion possibilities. (BB)
Day 4 Rome-Florence. (Wed.) This morning drive along the Highway of the Sun north into Tuscany and its hill-clad vineyards, which house the famous Chianti wine, to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance. Meet your Local Guide and visit the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS with Michelangelo’s celebrated David and the magnificent CATHEDRAL. Admire Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry’s heavy bronze “Gate of Paradise,” and sculpture-studded SIGNORIA SQUARE. Time to browse for Florentine leather goods and gold jewelry. (BB,D)
Day 5 Florence-Venice. (Thu.) Through the wooded Apennine Hills and the lush plains of the River Po, the largest river in Italy, to Venice, a powerful magnet for romantics and art lovers from around the globe. Enter in style by PRIVATE BOAT to meet your Local Guide. Highlights of your walking tour are ST. MARk’S SQUARE and the BYZANTINE BASILICA, lavish DOGES’ PALACE, and the BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Also watch skilled GLASSBLOWERS fashion their delicate objects in an age-old traditional manner. (BB)
Day 6 At Leisure in Venice. (Fri.) A whole day to explore Venice on your own: join the locals and ride the Vaporetto, have a cappuccino at a sidewalk café, or wander through the narrow streets and discover Rialto Bridge. To top it all, why not join an optional cruise to the charming island of Burano. (BB,D)
Day 7 Venice-Zadar, Croatia. (Sat.) Enjoy a scenic drive along the fast highway skirting the Adriatic coast. Cross the border and enter Slovenia. After a short ride you will be in Croatia. Drive south along the “Adriatic Riviera” and stop in picturesque Zadar for your overnight stay. (BB,D)
Day 8 Zadar-Trogir-Split. (Sun.) A leisurely morning to explore the town, then a short drive takes you to Trogir, a coastal town of Greek origin. Your orientation features the Romanesque cathedral and the impressive Cipiko Palace. After lunch drive along the Dalmatian coast to Split, the ancient Spalato. (BB,D)
Day 9 Split. (Mon.) Hear about the history of this captivating resort from your Local Guide and visit the labyrinth of 4th-century DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE, a well -preserved fortress and a living part of the Old Town. Balance of the day at leisure to further explore the maze of shops and taverns. (BB)
Day 10 Split-Dubrovnik. (Tue.) A leisurely departure this morning. Enjoy more stunning seascapes during the short drive to Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (BB,D)
Day 11 Dubrovnik. (Wed.) Dubrovnik, beautifully situated on a promontory jutting into the Adriatic Sea, was once an independent maritime republic rivaling Venice. Your Local Guide takes you to the impressive ramparts, erected during the Crusades to protect the town against land attacks, and will show you the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries. Then of course you will visit the 15th century RECTOR’S PALACE. Afternoon and evening at leisure. (BB)
Day 12 Dubrovnik-Plitvice. (Thu.) Enjoy a pleasant drive north through the Croatian countryside to the Plitvice NATIONAL PARk, famous for its lakes, waterfalls, and forests. This is the perfect place to stay overnight and soak in the pure beauty of the area. (BB,D)
Day 13 Plitvice-Zagreb. (Fri.) A comfortable drive to Zagreb, capital of Croatia. Meet your Local Guide and start your afternoon sightseeing tour, which features all important landmarks of the Lower and medieval Upper Town, such as the Parliament, Stone Gate, the Archbishop’s Palace, and more, plus a visit to the majestic CATHEDRAL. Day 14 At Leisure in Zagreb. (Sat.) Today you have a whole day to explore Zagreb on your own: wander through the main center and browse through the shops, or visit one of the excellent museums and art galleries. Your Tour Director has suggestions for exciting optional activities. Tonight enjoy an included farewell dinner at the hotel to celebrate the success of your vacation. (BB,D)
