Day 1 Arrival in San Francisco.
Pick up your car and start exploring or proceed to your hotel.
Day 2 San Francisco.
An entire day to enjoy the many sights. Visit Fisherman’s Wharf and enjoy the local fare. While there, visit Pier 39 and its many shops and restaurants. Perhaps take a cruise on the San Francisco bay, with magnificent views of the Golden Gate Bridge, or visit infamous Alcatraz Island. Also, be sure to visit Chinatown and Golden Gate Park. You can also drive across the Golden Gate Bridge to visit Sausalito and Muir Woods National Monument, a preserve of coastal redwoods.
Day 3 San Francisco–Monterey.
Start your drive down the beautiful California coast. Head south on Highway 1 and stop in Pescadero and visit Big Basin Redwoods State Park. This is California’s oldest state park and encompasses more than 18,000 acres of old growth and recovering redwood forest. Continue on to Monterey. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium which houses unique exhibits about Monterey Bay, one of the richest marine habitats in the world. Then visit Cannery Row, made famous by author John Steinbeck, with its many shops and restaurants. APPROXIMATE DRIVING DISTANCE: 126 Miles
Day 4 Monterey–Pacific Coast Highway–Solvang.
Perhaps begin the day with the stunning 17-Mile Drive, offering spectacular views of the rugged California coast, including Point Joe, Fanshell Beach, and the famous Lone Cypress. Along the way, see California sea otters, harbor seals, and sea lions. Continue south to San Simeon. Here you can choose to visit the magnificent Hearst Castle and view an IMAX film which chronicles the history of the castle and/or take a tour of the castle. Continue on to Solvang where Denmark has been recreated with charming buildings and windmills. APPROXIMATE DRIVING DISTANCE: 210 Miles
Day 5 Solvang–Los Angeles.
Start your day with a short drive to Santa Barbara. Here you can visit the famous Santa Barbara Mission, Stearns Wharf, and the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, which houses 65 acres of native plants. Then on to glamorous Los Angeles. Drive through Hollywood and Beverly Hills. See Mann’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Perhaps take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kodak Theatre. APPROXIMATE DRIVING DISTANCE: 128 Miles
Day 6 Los Angeles.
Continue your stay in Los Angeles. Consider visiting Universal Studios, the world’s largest movie studio and theme park. Or visit the seaside town of Santa Monica. The Third Street Promenade is a local favorite, featuring a mix of dining, shopping, and street performances.
Day 7 Los Angeles–San Diego.
Today, drive south to San Diego. Along the way, perhaps stop at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. You may also want to visit the mission in San Juan Capistrano or Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. Once in San Diego, consider a dinner cruise on the bay. APPROXIMATE DRIVING DISTANCE: 120 Miles
Day 8 San Diego.
The entire day is yours to enjoy what San Diego has to offer. Perhaps visit Balboa Park, home of the San Diego Zoo, or visit the San Diego Wild Animal Park. You may also want to consider a visit to SeaWorld to see Shamu or ride on the Journey to Atlantis!
Day 9 San Diego.
