Day 1 Miami–Lima, Peru. Board your flight to South America and arrive early this morning in Lima, Peru. (BB)
Day 2 Lima, Peru. Your included city tour focuses on lima’s rich colonial history as well as the modern city. lima was the bastion of Spanish South america from its founding in 1535 until the independence of the South american republics in the early 19th century. Visits include the CATHEDRAL, where the skeleton of Francisco Pizarro is sealed in a wooden coffin and the SAN FRANCISCO MONASTERY with its eerie burial crypts. (BB)
Day 3 Lima–Cuzco. Fly to Cuzco nestled high in the andes. Your city tour visits the SANTO DOMINGO MONASTERY, built on the foundations of the inca Temple of the Sun, the CATHEDRAL, and the nearby TEMPLE OF SACSAYHUAMAN. (BB)
Day 4 Cuzco . Today, a short drive into the Urubamba Valley leads to the market town of PISAC. Handmade rugs, alpaca sweaters, and jewelry can be bought here at bargain prices. at the other end of the valley is OLLANTAYTAMBO. Here some of the finest examples of inca masonry can be seen. Maybe sample local cuisine at one of Cuzco’s numerous restaurants this evening. (BB,L)
Day 5 Cuzco–Machu Picchu Board a train bound for MACHU PICCHU and cut a path through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Explore this intact fortress with its temple remains, holy houses, and mile-long aqueduct. For the hikers, a brisk one-hour walk leads to the Sun Gate, the ancient entrance used by the Incas. Hike Huayna Picchu or simply relax in the hotel. (BB,L,D) Day 6 Machu Picchu–Cuzco. After a morning at leisure in Machu Picchu, return to Cuzco. Maybe visit the inca Museum or wander through the artisan district of San Blas. (BB)
Day 7 - 10 Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios, also serves as entry to the amazon Jungle. On day 7, fly from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado and embark on a MOTORBOAT JOURNEY up the Tambopata river to view turtles, caimans, monkeys, and the river birdlife, such as capped herons, black skimmers, and kingfishers. Your unique AMAZON JUNGLE lodge is located within the ese’ eja Native indian Community. enjoy another boat trip followed by a walk to the TRES CHIMBADAS OXBOW LAKE. Enjoy a CANOE RIDE along the lake’s edge to witness giant river otters at play; these are the largest and most endangered of the otter species. Take a stroll around the area surrounding the lake or perhaps take a swim. You can also hike along the trails located nearby. at night, why not participate in an optional night walk to observe the nocturnal wildlife near one of the mammal licks? To get more insight into jungle life, visits include a PARROT CLAY LICK to watch parrots and macaws perch to eat clay; and a NATIVE SLASH AND BURN FARM, once thought to be wasteful but now proven to be a sustainable method.
